Mathematics, 2 units of credit; Science, 2 units of credit; Social Studies, 3 units of
credit; Health/Physical Education, 1 unit of credit; Humanities, 1 unit of credit;

opportunity to earn up to 17.5 elective credits in four years to help them prepare for
individual career goals. Counselors constantly assist with class selection and are glad to
provide additional individual assistance when it is requested. In general, students are
placed in classes according to ability level and previous preparation but will not be
allowed to select classes below their level as determined by counselors and teachers.
Four subjects is a maximum class load each quarter for all students. All Freshman and
Sophomores are encouraged to take four classes. Juniors and Seniors have the option of
three classes with study hall and student assistantship. An independent block is available
to seniors with the approval of the parents, counselor, and the principal. Juniors may
request an independent block under special circumstances. All students must be registered
for three credit bearing courses to be counted as full time students. Student
schedules with less than three credit experiences will be done with administrator approval
only.
PRE-REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Pre-registration takes place in the Spring for the following school year. Students
indicate which classes they intend to take the following year.
1. For this reason, pre-registration
should receive careful consideration by students and their parents. Choice of subjects
should be as final as possible. A parent or guardian of the student must sign the
pre-registration form as approval of classes. Please include telephone number in case the
school needs to call.
2. Academically valid, student initiated schedule changes will be permitted prior to
the beginning of each quarter. Parental and counselor approval is required. It is
imperative that the student’s original selection of courses is well thought out. Any
changes students may want are contingent upon space available and the sequencing of
classes in the block schedule. Students may not be able to change their schedule and may
not be able to take their newly desired class until the following year.
3. Several courses require an application form be completed and approved prior to the
student being accepted into the course. These courses are identified under the
"Recommended Pre-requisite" column throughout this guide. Applications are
available from counselors and instructors of these courses.
4. Students will include at least three full year alternative subjects or the
equivalent when completing pre-registration plans. These alternates will be used in case
of filled classes or schedule conflicts.
5. Honor classes are designated (H). These are higher level classes which are more
demanding than other classes. For this reason grades are computed into the student’s
GPA as follows: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2.
Classes may not be offered or they may be combined with another class
if too few students pre-register for them.
GENERAL
REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION
Minimum requirements for graduation from Cañon City High School in the School District
Fremont RE-1 include the following:
1. Eight (8) semesters of attendance beyond the eighth grade is required, unless the
student qualifies for early graduation at the conclusion of the seventh semester. Students
requesting early graduation must make formal application to the principal by December 1.
Students who complete their work at mid-year and are eligible to graduate shall receive
their diploma at the end of the school year and may return to take part in the graduation
exercises. A student who completes graduation requirements at the end of the seventh
semester will receive a transcript and letter signifying completion of all graduation
requirements.
2. Active Student status upon early graduation is forfeited.
The principal, with approval of the superintendent, may waive a given requirement if it
is determined to be in the best educational interest of the student.
A student who makes normal progress towards graduation will be in regular attendance
and abide by the rules and regulations of Cañon City High School. Students who refuse to
abide by the reasonable rules and regulations of the school and of the district, or who
are not regular in attendance, may not be permitted to attend.
A student who fails to meet graduation requirements at the end of eight semesters of
attendance will be permitted to continue in school and carry a course load sufficient to
permit him/her to meet graduation requirements or until reaching the age of twenty-one.
TRANSFER STUDENTS
Transfer students will be expected to carry a normal load for grade level attained at
the time of transfer into the district. The student will be responsible for district
requirements while enrolled at Cañon City High School.
GRADE CLASSIFICATION OF STUDENTS
All students will be classified as follows:
Sophomore - minimum of 6 credits
Junior - minimum of 12 credits
Senior - minimum of 17 credits
A credit deficient student will be reclassified at the end of each academic semester.
CO-CURRICULAR ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1. A student may participate competitively in high school
activity programs only if he or she is not failing more than one subject. This includes
all co-curricular activities. All participants must be enrolled and passing 1.5
credits to maintain eligibility.
2. Any student who participates in athletics must have a physical before reporting for
a sport. The physical is good for one calendar year.
3. Band, chorus, drama, and competitive speech students are to be available for public
appearances because an important part of the work in these subjects is public performances
(concerts, pep rallies, competition, and other special performances). Students enrolled
will accept this as part of their required work for class evaluation.

POST-SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS ACT
The Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Act permits eleventh and twelfth grade students
to enroll in post-secondary courses offered in state institutions of higher learning and
earn both high school and college credit. Students should discuss with their counselor the
procedure for enrolling for high school credit to be awarded by Cañon City High School.
Students should keep in mind that courses must be determined to be acceptable for high
school credit and needed to meet high school graduation requirements if tuition is to be
paid by the School District Fremont RE-1.
SENIOR TO SOPHOMORE PROGRAM
Students now have the option of earning college credit through the University of
Southern Colorado. If a student is enrolled in selected courses at Cañon City High
School, he or she may sign up for college credit. Students are responsible for tuition
cost. Approximate cost is $35 per college credit hour. Currently courses that dual credit
can be earned in are: C++ Programming, Biology II, Chemistry II, Senior English Honors,
Geology, D & D II and III, Competitive Speech, Calculus, Spanish III and IV, and
Newspaper/Journalism. These college credit classes will be identified throughout this
handbook by the symbol "v".
SCHOOL TO CAREER PATHWAYS
Cañon City High School follows a career education model based on six broad career
paths encompassing all occupations. Each pathway contains occupations that require
different levels of education and training. While some occupations within a certain
pathway will be open to a person with a high school diploma only, the pathway also
includes jobs that require a few months to many years of post high school education and
training. People working in a career path basically share interests, abilities and
talents. Career paths help students identify a career focus without being locked in to a
specific occupation.
