BAND - The purpose of this class is to further develop music appreciation, knowledge of the fine arts, poise, self-confidence, self-discipline, and individual improvement and fulfillment on a musical instrument. The development of instrumental techniques, articulations, interpretation and tonal blending is stressed. The students learn to cooperate in working for a common goal with a feeling of belonging to a group. Band is open by audition to those who have achieved a high performance level on their wind or percussion instruments.

GENERAL MUSIC - General music is designed to help the student connect music to real life and living. Our focus is on music and its use and value in all peoples lives. Although we use history as a resource, we study music from a social rather than a historical perspective. By exploring the music involved in the students own life as well as human life in other cultures, we will study all kinds of music throughout the course. From Classical to Broadway--from Country to Rap--from Rhythm and Blues to Rock and Roll, our goal will be to gain an understanding of, and respect for, the role and importance of music in the student’s life.

CONCERT BAND - Concert Band is a performing ensemble that is designed for band students who were not placed in Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble and those who would like to learn a new instrument. This band will focus on basic tone production, music reading skills and the elements of musicianship. This band will perform in all band concerts, contests and pep band activities. Auditions for bad placement will take place in the spring.

CONCERT CHOIR: Concert choir is open to all students without audition. Choral singing will be the course emphasis with supplemental studies in music theory and music appreciation. In addition, the class will cover basic singing techniques as well as some basic choreography. It is recommended that those students wishing to audition for Tiger Ladies or Modern Choir take Concert Choir prior to their audition.

ENCORE!- Members are selected by auditions and consist mostly of 11th and 12th grade students. Students must have a high degree of vocal music ability. The students must also be ready to perform out of school many times during the school year. Students must maintain eligibility and dress code regulations as prescribed by the high school. The type of music the group will perform will vary. It is expected that the student who enrolls in Modern Choir will remain in the class for the entire year.

TIGER LADIES - Students selected for Tiger Ladies must also meet audition requirements and will consist mostly of 11th & 12th grade girls. The students must meet the same dress and performance stipulations as the other choirs. The music will vary. It is expected that the student who enrolls in Tiger Ladies remain in the class for the entire year.

MUSIC THEORY - The fundamentals of basic music theory and applications are stressed in this class. The history of music notations and the scientific and mathematical basis of music sound and notations are covered. The purpose is to learn and use basic keyboard harmony to understand figured bass through the second inversion, develop ear training and study all major, minor, diminished, perfect and augmented intervals.

JAZZ BAND - (Prerequisite: Band) Jazz Band is a performing group that is open to students already participating in the CCHS Band program. Jazz Band will meet once a week on Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The Jazz Band will perform in at least one concert and two jazz festivals. Music that will be performed includes swing, rock, Latin, Dixie and traditional jazz. Students will learn to improvise and will perform improvised solos in concerts. Students who are not in the CCHS Band program may be admitted at the discretion of the director.
