FOOD FACTS AND PREPARATION - This 18 week course is designed for those who are interested in facts about food pertaining to health as well as those who enjoy cooking and eating various foods. The course will start with basic information from the food pyramid. Students will be able to identify healthy food choices and apply them to their diet. Calorie consumption, fad diets and eating disorders will also be addressed. Cooking labs will be conducted for each of the food groups. As the class progresses more advanced techniques and use of special equipment will be taught in relation to various foods. Candy making, pastry making, jerky making and gourmet cooking are examples of these specialized food preparation units. Food Facts and Preparation is a class you will be sure to learn in and enjoy on a daily basis.

 

CLOTHING CONCEPTS - (Prerequisite: B or better in Middle School clothing class or Sophomore or above) Do you enjoy shopping for clothes? Do you know colors and styles that look best on you? Wardrobe planning, selecting of clothes, exploring accessories and care of clothing start off this class. Your sewing experience will begin with an easy and fun project to get you comfortable with sewing basics and sewing machines. The second quarter will involve using standard pattern directions to construct two projects of progressing difficulty. Students will also have the opportunity to explore various careers in the clothing industry.

 

RELATIONSHIPS - Do you enjoy spending time with others? Or are you interested in a career which involves working with people? If so, Relationships is perfect for you. Relationships is a 18 week course designed for those interested in learning about effective strategies for improving interpersonal relationship skills within friendships, opposite sex relationships and family relationships. Topics include personal growth and development, stress management within relationships, decision making within relationships, communication, teen issues, compatibility factors in relationships, responsibilities of marital and premarital adjustments and dealing with individual and family crisis. Relationships enhances one’s confidence, assertiveness and prepares one to function successfully in today’s society. Relationships promises to be educational, fun and stimulating. If you like psychology, you will love relationships.

 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND PARENTING - Do you enjoy children? Do you want to make a difference in a child’s life? Are you interested in a career which involves working with young people? If so, Child Development and Parenting is designed for those students who are interested in learning about children and becoming skillful and successful parents in the future. Students will have the opportunity to examine factors involved in conception, pregnancy, prenatal care, labor and delivery. Developmental units will stress physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth from birth to age six. Other topics covered include daycare exploration, child abuse, and health and safety for children. Finally, students will examine the importance of caring for children and examine parenting skills needed to foster guidance, discipline and human development.

 

TEEN CHOICES AND CHALLENGES - How do I know what’s right for me? Decisions to make? Here is an opportunity to examine challenges and explore the options that you as a teenager face in making choices in your life and in developing relationships. It is a chance to compare your ideas, thoughts and experiences with other students and the experts. You will gain information on various topics such as developing self confidence, peer pressure, dating, relationships, sexuality, drugs, alcohol, abuse, depression, and suicide. You will also gain the knowledge which will assist you in making responsible consumer decisions. You will assess buying versus renting and how to go about doing both. Finally, you will get some hands-on experience in a home decorating unit.
