ART EDUCATION
Students will be required to furnish their own supplies (ie. paint brushes, clay) determined by the project they choose to do.
Career Paths are:
INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING - This course is a multi-media approach to drawing using pencil, ink, and charcoal. Concepts taught: one point and two point perspective; shading using a light direction; atmospheric and linear perspective (depth); proportioning and gridding. History of art from prehistoric to Gothic times will be explored in notes and activities.
INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING - This course is for the student whose main interest in art is painting. Watercolor, Tempera and Acrylic will be explained and students may paint in each of the four media. Representational approach will be taken. Color theory, composition, and brush work will be stressed.
INTRODUCTION TO SCULPTURE AND POTTERY - Students will learn technical terms, tools, functions and stages of clay. Slab, combination, wheel thrown, free choice figure, and abstract sculpture will be explored. Students will also do a written and oral self-critique of their work.
INTRODUCTION TO PRINTMAKING - (Prerequisite: Intro. to drawing or Intro. to Painting) This course is for students who wish to produce prints from Intaglio, the silk-screen and relief print processes. Printing on paper, textiles and other surfaces will be explored.
DRAWING II - (Prerequisite: Intro to Drawing) Students will learn color theory and apply it to drawing in color and ink media; pencils, pastels; and any dry drawing media. The use of texture and different application techniques will be taught. Solving complex compositional problems will be presented. Drawing II students will be taking a unique approach to drawing. This will be done by encouraging students to push the limits of media, subject matter and technique. Art history survey from the Renaissance through modern times will be explored.
PAINTING II - (Prerequisite: Intro to Painting) Students will learn painting techniques of underpainting, glazing, scumbling and impasto. Brushwork and preparation of grounds will also be learned, along with transparent and opaque media. Students will research a variety of painting styles and artists. Students will develop original and creative work. Final painting will be matted, framed and publicly exhibited by the student. The expense of framing supplies will be the responsibility of the student. Students who choose oil will need to furnish their own paint and brushes.
ADVANCED SCULPTURE AND POTTERY - (Prerequisite: Intro to Sculpture & Pottery) This is a class for those students who prefer a three dimensional approach to art. This advanced course will challenge the student in the area of pottery, sculpture or both, while learning the working properties of this highly flexible medium. A history/cultural project of students choice will be required.
COMMERCIAL ART - This is a design class that teaches the basic techniques of graphic design necessary in commercial art. Students will learn paste-up, logo design, art sizing, and advertising art. This course is designed especially for the student who is considering a commercial art or business career. Juniors and seniors only!
